A brief introduction of CMDP

    The Data Bank of Chinese Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors is also known as China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP), which is a public welfare organization under the leadership of Red Cross Society of China. The registry mark of CMDP is a red cross surrounded by four red hearts, which sufficiently demonstrates the humanism aim of the Red Cross Society to protect everyone’s life and health as well as its love of “All for one and one for all”. CMDP was formerly known as “China allogenetic bone marrow transplantation donor databank” approved by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China in 1992. In 2001, the Red Cross Society of China restarted CMDP. In December 2001, China Marrow Donor Program headquarter was established with the approval of State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform..

By the end of 2009, there are 31 provincial branch registries, 31 HLA laboratories, 5 high resolution laboratories and 1 quality control laboratory. Cord blood service was added from May, 2007. There are 1,120,000 HLA data was available for patients, and over 1400 volunteers have donated stem cell to the patients, among whom 60 volunteers donated for patients from US, Singapore, Switzerland, Britain, Hong Kong and Tai wan. The establishment and development of CMDP play a positive role in saving patients’ lives, meantime bring good social benefit for building a harmonious society. Therefore, in 2006 CMDP was awarded “First Social Public Welfare Demonstration Project” as well as “the China charity award” by Ministry of Civil Affairs.

In order to save the lives of millions of patients who need stem cell transplantation, CMDP tries hard to build the registry containing two million donors’ information to serve the patients around the world by 2015.

Advisor Committee

Advisor Committee was composed of 20 experts in the fields of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, HLA typing, law, IT information and ethic.

One Expiration Biennially

The Advisor Committee was leaded by the President of Prof. Daopei Lu, Academician of China Technology Academy.

Divided into two workshops of transplantation and HLA typing.

CMDP laboratories     

CMDP started to establish laboratory in 2002, and by the end of 2009, 31 HLA laboratories, 5 high resolution laboratories and 1 quality control laboratory have been founded in China. These laboratories cooperate with CMDP, under the supervision of CMDP expert committee.   

HLA Tissue Typing Lab

     It is mainly for low resolution testing donor's HLA—A, B, DR and uploading data. Up to now, there are 31 HLA tissue typing labs of Database of Chinese Hematopoiesis Stem Cell Donor. 

HLA High Resolution Lab 

It is responsible for confirmation to HLA from initial successful typing donor and recipient. After confirmation, it then will carry out high resolution confirmation to HLA from donor and recipient. Based on both procedures, it then can enter the donation procedure. CMDP has established such high resolution labs in BeiJing, ShenZhen,ShangHai ,HangZhou and Suzhou. 

Quality Control Lab 

Authorized by Management Center of CMDP, Quality Control Lab is established under the Center of Clinical Laboratories of Ministry of Health, to do the job of evaluating standard samples from each HLA tissue typing labs and sample testing the key-in data. Since 2003, it is tested twice a year. Up to now, the fault rate is decreased from 8.18% to 0.18%, reaching the international advanced level.

 

Transplantation hospitals and collection hospitals introductions  

 

Based on the <allogenetic stem cell transplantation technical regulation> and < allogenetic stem cell collection regulation>issued by Ministry of Health, the hospitals which want to be the allogenetic stem cell transplantation and collection hospitals firstly should apply to the Chinese marrow donor program headquater or the provincial branches and fill in the <stem cell collection and transplantation hospital application>. It should report to the provincial health administration. The provincial heath administration concludes that it conforms to the requirements of launching allogenetic stem cell transplantation and collection hospitals before it gives approval, then it is qualified as stem cell collection and transplantation hospital. The stem cell collection and transplantation hospital approved by the provincial health administration should report the <stem cell collection and transplantation hospital application>to the CMDP and sign cooperating protocol, until then it has got the qualification to carry out stem cell collection and transplantation.

By the end of 2007, there are nearly 100 stem cell collection and transplantation hospitals approved by the provincial health administration on file in CMDP management centre. 

Branch banks function   

CMDP provincial branch registry has been established in 31 provinces and cities around China. Their tasks are to make propaganda and collect suitable healthy citizen to be stem cell donor, collect the volunteers’ blood samples, carry out related consultation service, remobilization the volunteers, collecting stem cell, do follow-up study of the volunteers after donation and etc.

Donor service introduction 

Donor service department is responsible for giving guidance to the establishment of each branch around China, and training the staff. Patients preliminary search is open for both domestic and aboard patients. They also do the relative services including donor remobilization, high resolution detection, medical examination, stem cell collection and follow-up of both the donors and the patients. So far, more than 1600 cases of stem cell have been successfully supplied to the patients, including 60 to the patients abroad. Service hot line:+86-10-65126600. 

Technical service introduction 

The technical service department is responsible for the plan, draft and practice of rules and regulations of the CMDP, including registry network establishment, volunteer data management, search, HLA matching laboratory, HLA high resolution laboratory, stem cell transplantation hospitals and collection hospitals management and quality control, expert committee coordination, research management and etc.     

By now, the second generation of computer network covering the whole nation has been established, finishing the data center, and computer software development of branch registries, and at the same time, the backup data center is being built in case of network system disasters or other disasters such as earthquake. It is also networking with cord blood bank to provide cooperating search for the patients.

31 HLA laboratories, 5 HLA high resolution laboratories and 1 quality control laboratory have been accreditation. It cooperates with China Post Bureau to build a blood sample transport channel.     

According to the <allogenetic stem cell transplantation technique regulation> and < allogenetic stem cell collection regulation> issued by Ministry of Health, it has built relations and signed cooperating protocol with over 90 hospitals in China.

It’s responsible for the patients HLA search, and up to now, it has already provided more than 16000 preliminary searches.

It’s responsible for coordinating expert committee, and organize the experts for relative research.   

Public and education department introduction   

Public and education department is aimed to publicize the stem cell knowledge and the significance of building CMDP, attracting more suitable healthy citizens to join the CMDP and finally help to save more patients with blood disease. The responsibility of public and education department is to supervise the the branch registries on the publication, raise money to accelerate the CMDP establishment, launch national public activities, manage and maintain CMDP website: www.cmdp.com.cn, publish <CMDP newsletter>, contact media to release information to the public, strengthen communication of headquarter with branch registries, transplantation hospitals and collection hospitals and relative units.
